Ford Repair: Timing belt or chain, timing chains, timing belts

Question
I own a 1998 mustang V-6 3.8 with 95,000 miles on it. I know timing belts need to be replaced when this mileage has been reached. I'm not sure if my car has a belt or chain?? Should it be changed now if it is a chain??

Answer
Ben-

Your car has a timing chain.  They don't require nearly as much attention as belts, but you can't ignore them altogether.  Over time they will usually stretch, but generally not enough to really effect the motor.  Since timing chains aren't nearly as prone to breakage as there's really no scheduled replacement time table for them.  Generally if they stretch enough to effect the motor, you'll know and can have them replaced.  Much better than having it snap like a belt can and damage your motor.  Hope this helps.
