Ford Repair: Pitman Arm, pitman arm, ford dealership

Question
While having maintenance performed on my 1997 Expedition at the local Ford dealership about two years ago, I inquired about the cause of the "squeakiness" of the car. After describing the problem, the mechanic suggested that it was probably caused by the Pitman arm. He didn't think it was an immediate problem, and I have not replaced the part. I put up with squeak for two years, but recently the car has been difficult to keep straight on the road. My first thought was that I needed an alignment, but the responsiveness to steering has also been very poor. I've read where this is a symptom of a faulty Pitman arm.

I have two questions:

1. Does this sound like a problem with the Pitman arm?

2. Is this part difficult to replace? At first glance, it looks like an easy fix.

I just noticed that you said you have no experience with the larger models, but since I've already typed the questions, I'll go ahead an submit. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
Larger model is for 18 wheelers........
As far as the question....the only way to tell if it's the pitman arm is a visual inspection to check for loosness. Have a help move the steering wheel, with the engine off. If it's loose, you'll see it.
If you need to replace it...it is a simple fix......but I would suggest that you have a mechanic do it.....since any front end work requires an alignment after it is done.
