Ford Repair: Question previously asked 6-24-05, no response, power steering pump, haynes manual

Question
Hi, Erik. Thanks in advance for your time and assistance. I've since purchased the parts (pump with resevoir, pressure hose, return hose, cap, fluid). I have a Haynes manual. The parts store offers to pull the pulley for me! I travel with p.s. fluid! I'm pasting the original question:

Your question was
"Hi, Steve. This is a '91 Explorer with 150k miles. The p. steering balked or chirped for some time. Adding fluid provided temporary relief. The other day after pulling into a parking space, smoke emitted from under the hood. The area under the ps pump was wet. Since that day I've added fluid as it continues to balk and leak. A portion of the filler cap (fluid level) is now missing, presumably ingested by the pump. I'd like to replace the pump and lines. The return hose is available. The pressure hose may be tricky in acquiring. A seal kit is readily available. My question is, is replacing this stuff a task accomplished by the semi-novice? I have typical U.S. tools (sockets, box&open end wrenches, and of course some disposable asian types. I have jack stands, air ratchet, compressor, a hyd. jack, a creeper for oil changes. Is this doable? Thanks a bunch. Paul";

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
Pump replacement:
Disconnect battery ground cable.
Drain power steering pump reservoir, disconnect return hose at reservoir, then drain into suitable container.
Remove drive belts.
Remove oil dipstick tube, as required.
Remove power steering pump bracket support brace, if equipped.
Using power steering pump pulley removal tool No. T69L-10300-B or equivalent, hold pulley and rotate tool nut counterclockwise to remove. Do not apply in and out pressure as internal thrust area damage may occur.
Remove pump to bracket attaching bolts, then remove pump.
Reverse procedure to install.

The lines are pretty self explanitory........to aid in the removal of the high pressure line, CUT the line close to the fitting at the steering box, then use a socket to remove it.

Hope this helps,
Erik
