Ford Repair: Trouble Starting Engine, ford explorer sport, len roberts

Question
I have a 1995 Ford Explorer Sport 4WD, 160,000 miles.  This problem just started last week.  When car is cold or cool, engine starts right up.  Once engine gets hot, car will sometimes not start once engine is shut off.  Engine will crank but not fire up.  Let car cool for about 15 to 30 minutes, car fires up.

One guy told me it may be vapor lock and that I should consider changing my fuel filter (replaced fuel filter 3 years ago and has about 40,000 miles on it).  I have also lost some antifreeze over time but there is not an apparent leak (about a gallon over a 30 day period).  Could this be a thermostat problem?  My heat gauge is not working and I can't tell if my engine is overheating?

Also just changed air filter.  Fuel pump was replaced 3 years ago.  Spark plugs and tune up done 1 year ago.

Thanks,
Len Roberts

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
One of the reasons that fuel injection is better than carbeuration is that it doesn't vapor lock......it can't. The fuel system is under high pressure and is moving too quickly for the fuel to change to vapor.
I would suggest that you have the computer system scanned for fault codes and go from there.
As far as coolant system loss....it's not your thermostat that's causing the loss of coolant. It might be the cause of the engine over heating or not heating up. Have it checked and repalced.
