Ford Repair: Starter on 1989 Ford Probe, ft lbs torque, torque starter

Question
I'm trying to find the best way of removing a starter from a 1989 Ford Probe.  Has a 2.2 4cyl. Engine, non turbo.  I was looking at it from up top and it looks like the only way to get to it is from underneath.  I was looking for suggestions.  Do I have to disconect the exhaust?

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.

Disconnect battery ground cable.
On models with manual transaxles, remove exhaust pipe bracket.
On all models, remove transaxle to engine bracket, then the intake manifold to engine bracket.
Disconnect wiring from starter motor.
Remove three starter motor attaching bolts, then the starter motor from the vehicle.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
Torque starter motor attaching bolts to 23-34 ft. lbs.
Torque intake manifold to engine bracket bolts to 14-22 ft. lbs.
On automatic transaxle models, when installing the transaxle to engine bracket, torque bellhousing bolt to 66-86 ft. lbs., then the remaining three bracket bolts to 27-38 ft. lbs.
On manual transaxle models, when installing the transaxle to engine bracket, torque bracket bolts to 32-45 ft. lbs.

Hope this helps,
Erik
