Ford Repair: windshield wiper problem, windshield wiper, ground application

I have a 1988 Ford Ranger and I've had a problem with the wipers working. There is no intermittent feature on them. The wipers operate by a lever on the steering column. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. They haven't worked now for a couple of days. Can you tell me what I should check for as far as testing to see if I can isolate the problem? Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
Start by checking the wires at the motor for voltage and ground application and work back. Also, is there any physical problem with the control lever on the steering column? If so, replace the switch.
