Ford Repair: 98 Explorer gas gauge, locking gas cap, gas gauge

Hello Erik

My 98 Explorer sport- 4.0 sohc engine, auto trans, 2 wheel drive with 48,000 miles on it.Aftermarket locking gas cap.


The gas gauge stops at the 3/4 mark when the tank is filled up.

What tests can I do to determine the problem?

Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
You'll need a gauge testing unit. It will have you cut the sending wire and you'll be able to test the gauge. Then IF the gaue checks out Ok, you'll have to look in to the sending unit itself, which is in the tank.
