Ford Repair: Automatic Transmission Overdrive-1996 Ford Escort, torque convertor, transmission shop

 My 1996 Escort will not shift into overdrive. All other shifting works great.
 Do you know the likely cause and is it repairable by the amateur mechanic or do you recommend taking to a dealer?

Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
It sounds like the torque convertor or lock up solenoid has gone south. No, this isn't something a back yard mechanic should tackle. I would suggest you take it to the dealership or transmission shop.
