Ford Repair: 2001 Taurus Engine Squeak, proper lubricant, throttle linkage

Question
I found this posting (see below) on your site. I am experiencing the same problem and about the same mileage.  I have determined that this squeak comes from the timing sensor.  Since this engine has electronic ignition it still needs something mechanical to tell it's at TDC.  It's a magnet spinning around on the top of a shaft.  Excuse my description, I am mechanically inclined but not mechanically literate.  Hopefully you can tell me what is the proper lubricant to use eliminate the noise.  Would spraying a pentrating lubricant like WD40 or some sort of silicone spray be acceptable?  Maybe you can tell me if this would be covered under the engine/drivetrain warrenty before I go in and try to fix it myself.

Thanks!

Question
Hi. I have a 2001 Taurus 3.0L with 90K that just started making a squeaking/chirping noise at idle. It goes away with acceleration, and doesnt change at all when a/c is turned on/off, doesnt increase when turning the steering wheel. One of the pulleys or the belt, right (idler, water pump)? That's what I thought until I listened for the location of the chirp/squeal. It's coming from the top of the engine, near where the throttle linkage hooks into the fuel system (no where near the front of the engine). I'm 95% sure the noise isnt reflecting back there from the pulleys, but I dont know of anything near the top of the engine that would cause that noise. It isnt any more noticeable when I remove the oil fill cap(like it might be internal engine trouble). Any thoughts? Thanks for the help.

Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
Finding a noise in an engine bay is difficult at best. What I would suggest that you do is use a long screw drive as a stethiscope. Place the handle behind your ear and jaw bone and probe with the blade section. You might also want to remove the belt and start the engine, for a brief period to isolate the noise. While the belt is off, check ALL of the pulleys and also the condition of the belt.
Hope this helps,
Erik

Ford won't cover wear items (brakes, tune up items, general service) You can ask, but you will most likely get shot down. I wouldn't suggest putting a spray --WD40, PBblaster, Silicone or any thing else--on the belts unless it was for diagnosis and then they were replaced.
Hope this helps,
Erik
