Ford Repair: baffle in the upper intake, ford zx2, ford dealer

Question
Last week my '99 Ford ZX2 broke down on the highway and I had to have it towed in order to take it to Merchant's Tire and Auto.  Up until it broke down, the car was running as smoothly as when I first bought it.   It had gone through inspection five months ago, and I had a new battery installed by Merchant's 2 months earlier.  After paying them an evaluation fee, they looked at the car overnight and told me that they didn't know what the real problem was or how to fix it.

After that insightful analysis, I had to have the Ford towed to a Ford dealer mechanic at my expense again.  After looking at it a couple days, the Ford people told me that they couldn't figure out what the problem was yet.  Another day passed, and they told me the problem was the "baffle in the upper intake" was broken.  I asked him what that meant, and he said he didn't know, that's just what the "tech guy" told him.  He then asked another fellow mechanic, and he shrugged and said he didn't know either.  What it sounded like to me was that they had to take everything apart again and start over.  In other words, it will be over a week before they can be sure to really repair it.  Maybe.

Anyway do you know what's really going on here?  It's only amusing for a little while to hear auto jargon that no one seems to understand but is being used to mollify patrons, but I'm curious as to whether all of this fuss and expense is really necessary.  I thank you for your help.

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question ...I'll try to help.
I wish I could tell you from what they told you what is going on........but I can't. I would start with the basics....spark, fuel, timing belt(broken?).........
My suggestion is to go there and ask to see your car .......NOW, and get a straight answer from them.
Hope this helps,
Erik
