Ford Repair: 95 Ford Escort S/W Manual fuel injected, ford escort wagon, inertia switch

Question
I have a 95 ford escort wagon w/fuel injection, the problem is that after it was driven a few miles to work, and getting ready to leave eight hours later, it wouldn't start.  The car would turn over, but you couldn't smell any gas and it would not start. Had it towed home. Whilechecking for fuses I noticed a fuel cutoff switch in the cargo area under the rear radio speaker on the right side.  The top of the switch had a red buttion that was depressed, but would go back to the top with a "click" from a knife-tip. I thought that may be the problem and tried to start the car, but it would not start. The car ran good turned it off at work as usual but would not restart. Any help would be appreciated, tks Bob

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
Try removing the wires from the inertia switch and using a jumper wire, jump the connection. This will by-pass the switch. See if that gets the fuel pump working. If not, reconnect the switch and your problem is elsewhere. You will need to start at the engine and make sure that there is no fuel pressure with a gauge. Next move to the fuel tank and check for voltage at the fuel pump. If present, time to replace the pump. If not, you might want to check the fuel pump relay, and then the computer system.
Hope this helps,
Erik
