Ford Repair: oil in brake line, locking gas cap, brake failure

Question
Hi Robert,

The brakes went out on my 2003 Explorer last week.  I mean ALL THE WAY out too.  Pedal goes to the floor and has no effect.

Took it to my mechanic who says "someone" put oil in instead of brake fluid and it has destroyed multiple components of the brake system.

So now, I have to become a detective to find out who did it.  I'd like to know, if possible, approximately how long after oil was added to the brake system before a complete brake failure would happen.  Would it be 1000 miles, 2000, 3000 or more?

Thanks a lot,
  Mike

Answer
Mike,
Your lucky, u or anyone else was killed, or in a car accident. You would probally get to about 50 to 100 miles before your breaks failed. I can tell you one thing, your probally looking at big money to repair this. The system will need to be drained, and componets replaced, master cylinder, brake booster ect. Nowadays, you have to lock everything up, and people just dont have respect for other peoples property. You may want to get a locking gas cap also, sugar in your fuel will destroy your engine, not to mention your fuel system. I have seen this happen also. I wish you the best of luck catching who ever did it. Thanks for the question...
