Ford Repair: Trouble starting SUV, crank shaft, pvc valve

Question
Hello Erik H.,

Currently I am having problems starting my 2001 Ford Escape. I have about 63,000 miles on it. I've taken it to 3 different repair shops and no one can seem reproduce the problem. When I turn the key,it doesn't always start. It sounds as if the engine is flooded, but I know it's not (at least I'm not pumping the gas pedal). After the car finally starts I seem to smell gas.  The  battery has been replaced due to the black dot indicating time to change. Suggestions made by different people include: throttle sensor, some type of crank shaft sensor (can't remember exact name), the spark plugs may need to be replaced due to them not burning off the gas properly (replaced spark plugs about 2,000 miles ago, don't remember brand) and ignition coil.  The alternator and started both tested good. I'm so frustrated Erik I don't know what to do. I haven't gotten any indicator lights, so I don't have a code to provide.  I even went so far as to record the engine trying to start.  Do u have any suggestions?

Thank u in advance for your help...even if u are unable to provide an answer.

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
What I would suggest is that you look at the over all tune up condition of the engine (not just plugs).........wires, air filter, pvc valve, and computer system. IF you are able to look at the scan tool values when starting it......this might lead you to a solution.
You might also want to take a look at the carbon canister purge system...........make sure it is still intact and the carbon canister is not flooded with fuel. This would be caused by over filling the fuel tank (everybody does it at some point)
Hope this helps,
Erik
