Ford Repair: timing belt replacement, timing belt replacement, interference engine

Question
1985 ford escort "L" series, auto, 2bbl, 1.6 engine. While driving, the engine just stopped running. Didn't know why.Tried to restart engine but no luck. After checking all I could my son found the timing belt had broke.
By turning the engine over did this throw the timing off, seeing no belt was attached to either pully.I have a new belt and after I install it,could the timing still be correct? I plan on having the timing checked by  an mechanic. Thanks for your time.No repair history on this part.

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
You are going to have probelms with this. the 1.6L is the interference engine that Ford had problem with, before switching to the 1.9L. The ignition timing should still be close to the same after the belt is repaced.....BUT, have it checked by a mechanic.
Hope this helps,
Erik
