Ford Repair: Timing Belt, interference engine, interference engines

Question
Hi Erik,
I own a 1993 Mercury Tracer,4 cyl.,1.9L. Milage:133,000.
My question is,does this model have a interference or non-interference engine?
I realize if the timing belt breaks in an interference engine it can cause severe damage.
I have been told not to worry;this model has a non-interference engine, but I wanted to get an expert's opinion because I recently purchased the car and don't know when the timimg belt was changed.
Thank you for your assistance.

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
What I usually tell my customers is to treat ALL of their engines as interference engines. Some are and most aren't ----BUT, I don't like seeing my customers broken down because of it.
The 1.9L isn't a problem engine. I usually reccomend to my customers that the timing belt should be changed every 60k miles.
Hope this helps,
Erik
