Ford Repair: Interference or Non Interference?, 1993 mercury tracer, interference engine

Question
Hi Steve,
I need an expert's answer for this subject.
I recently purchased a 1993 Mercury Tracer,4 cyl,1.9L.It is great on gas and I'm surprised at how much power it has for a small car.
This is my first Ford product;I always had GM products.
I am aware that on certain engines,if the timing belt breaks it can cause severe damage.
So does the Mercury Tracer have an interference or non-interference engine? It has 133,000 miles on it and I don't know when the timing belt was changed.
Thank you for your assistance.

Answer
Brenda-

To my knowledge the 1.9L motor is NOT a free-running motor, so if the belt breaks damage is likely to occur.  As for when to replace the belt, I would certainly do it before 150K miles.  Some belts will last for the life of a car while others go out at 75K miles.  It's all really a matter of luck.  I think 150K is a reasonable expectation of belt life.  Hope this helps.
