Ford Repair: ENGINE LIGHT CODE, ford contour, test meter

Hi, I have a 1998 FORD CONTOUR, 6 cylinder engine.
The engine light stays on. I had someone put a test meter on it and the code comes up, PO446,
it has to do with the emissions. Someone told me
it would be the gas cap and to replace it, which I did. The light was off for a week or so and came back on.

Do you have any idea what is wrong with this car and what needs to be replaced in order to get this light to go out permanently.

Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
 That code is for the canister vent solenoid, I can't see why they told you to replace the gas cap.
 The canister vent solenoid is in either one of two places.....In the engine compartment, or on top of the fuel tank. I would suggest you bring it to a garage and have it looked in to.
