Ford Repair: New computer installed, 460 ford motor, ford motor

Question
Erik, I emailed you earlier about a fuel pump problem on my motor home. Turned out to be the EEC relay that was pulling bown power to my eec and other electronics. We also replaced the EEC Module before we found the problem with the relay and now the engine runs, but the timing is retarded. I was told that the new EEC module has to learn the engine by driving the vehicle. I was also told that there is a way to reset the timing by removing a pin somewhere around the Dist. The motor Home is a 1991 model with a EFI 460 Ford motor. Can you give me any help on this? The timing seems too retarded to drive as is. The check engine light is also on. Thanks.  Pat

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
If you look at the distributor TFI module...there should be a pull out connector in the harness. pull it out and set the ignition timing.
As far as "re-learning" goes.......it's called idle strategy. After the base idle and base timing is set, clear the engine codes by disconnecting the battery and then wait about 15-20 minutes before connecting it. Then, drive the vehicle around over 40 mph, and back to idle a few times. Let it "work"  itself out.
Hope this helps,
Erik
