Ford Repair: Ford F150 1998 model, coolant water, coolant system

Question
Hello Eric,
My father-inlaw has trouble with his 4.2liter engine. After pulling the head we found water on top a piston. It began one day with hesitation as he was leaving for work, nocking & pinging but he is hard of hearing, his wife heard the noise as he left that morning.
After checking the dipstick for signs of water, there was very slite sign of water present. This is all I know as of now,I haven't looked at it myself. Just thought I might get a profesional's input before I go take a look.
                              Thanks,

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
Was the head gasket or cylinder head the reason for pulling the head? Also, was the coolant system completely drained before pulling it? Coolant/Water is usually splashed on the head when removing it. With out diagnosis, before hand, it's hard to say.
Since it is off, have a valve job performed, as well as having the heads planed.
Hope this helps,
Erik
