Ford Repair: Ford F150 4x4 steering and transmission probs, ford f150 4x4, power steering fluid

Question
1. transmission - I have an auto trans that shift very hard, it 'bangs' in every time it shifts, I have noticed that it does shift easier when pulling a trailer, I have changed the filter and fluid but it didn't help   2. steering - I have power steering fluid leaking out the bottom of the steering box, looks like a seal is gone, I have heard that it is better to get a new / re built box than to try to replace the seal due to the shaft is probably worn, you thoughts ?  thanks Dave

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
I would check the transmission fluid level. If it's up to the correct fill level, I would suggest that you bring it to a transmission shop or to the Ford dealership.
As far as your steering box leak goes.....A replacement is the easier and better way to go. I would suggest a new one as opposed to a re-man one. The reason being is that you might wind up with the same problem with the re-man one, a worn shaft, causing a leak. A new one comes with NEW parts, not used ones that are put back together.
Hope this helps,
Erik
