Ford Repair: 351W Swap, pms systems, pms system

Question
Hi,
I have a 91 Mustang 5.0 Lx 5 speed that I a putting a 351 in. The 351 is stroked to 383 and is fuel injected. My question is will the 5.0L computer work with the 351? Will it be able to adjust to increased cubic inch size and airflow, or do we need to buy and aftermarket piggy back unit or something similar? Thanks

Answer
Jaron-

The 5.0L computer won't work without the use of a piggyback.  Even if it would, the fuel and timing curves would be way off...especially for a 383 stroker motor.  I would recommend using either Anderson Motorsports PMS system or SDS Digital's system.  Both are fully user programmable by way of a small handheld controller and they both cost roughly the same.  I use an SDS Digital stand-alone system (which you won't need since you've got the computer already) for my '84 GT350 with a turbo'ed 331 and I'm very happy with it.  I've done work with PMS systems as well and have been very pleased with the ease of use and ability as well.  The SDS systems are available from WMS Motorsports.  If you've got deep pockets, you could opt for a full-zoot system like Accel DFI or Motec or the like...but those will easily cost you $1500 plus the cost of a laptop computer to tune the systems.  The added benefit would be that most come with a datalogger (for watching playback of engine functions after driving).  Then again...those are only really handy if the car will see a ton of strip time.  Hope this helps.
