Ford Repair: 4x4, torx head screws, petroleum base


Question
I have a 1993 Ford Explorer and I was not able to shift into 4-wheel using the push button today
the light coms on but wont in gage
i checked the fuss it was ok

Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
This is a real common problem for the Explorer.
What you need to do is remove the back side of the drive motor for the 4x4 transfer case. This is done by removing the 3 or 4 Torx head screws that are tamper resistant. You will need a special Torx bit, go to a parts store for this. Before removing the back plate, index the cover, so you can install it in the same position. After the back cover is off, get a pencil eraser and erase the corossion tracks on the plate inside the motor. I know this sounds strange, but the circuit is being lost there, and it needs to be cleaned. After the tracks are erased, spray it down with brake kleen, NOT carb clean (carb clean has a petroleum base and will leave an oil residue on all parts, brake kleen is petroelum free). Reinstall the backing plate in the indexed position, and you should be all set.
