Ford Repair: IGNITION MODULE FAILURE, thick film ignition, engine radiator

Question - Thanks for your reply,Erik...I definitely have the TFI...One last question: I previously owned a 4cyl,2.3 Aerostar, and saved the ignition module. The dealer has told me modules are different(2.8V6 vs. 2.3 4cyl.) But has it ever been your experience that the numbers on the screen indicate this, but the two parts in question turn out to be the same thing? I'm asking because I'm facing a bike ride in 15F weather to the parts store and $40. for a new module. The saved module was nearly new when I retired the vehicle so I wouldn't be pinching pennies unwisely if it could be used. Thanks again for your help.
86 Aerostar 2.8 V-6, automatic. What's ignition module failure like? Is it ever gradual, with the engine running poorly as a result of it? My only experience with it was nothing working when I turned the key--but is it necessarily always like that? Also, could it account for sparking at the terminals during a change of battery? Many thanks,Erik

Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
Yes, Ignition module failure can be gradual, and it can also be quick and sudden. The most typical failure is due to heat from the front of the engine (radiator), being blown on to it....this is of course the TFI (thick film ignition) module. If you have dura-spark, that is mounted on the fender or firewall. The dura-spark module is a completely different creature....it has and can create all sorts of problems.....from the easy to diagnose to the extreme. Typical module failure can be just about anything, from an engine skip to a complete no start condition.
As far as the battery posts having a spark when reconnected, I've never seen that. This is because the ignition key should be in the off position when replacing the battery. Hence, every system, with the exception of two or three (clock, radio, and memory for the PCM) should be off and not powered.
I hope this helps,
Erik

Hi thanks for the follow up....I'll try to help.
The TFI modules are calibrated and can be different.
Even that this is the case---you can try it, but be careful and look at everything. number of pins along the top side and also number of pins inside the module. You might want to call the local parts store and see what numbers they come up with for both vehicles.......are they different?

Hope this helps,
Erik
