Ford Repair: Fuel injection, pvc valve, ford ranger

Question
Aloha, I hope you can help me. I have a 86 ford ranger with a 4 cyl. Its fuel injected has about 130,000 miles. My problem is when I first start it in the mornings it idles fine . When I start to go it runs then it suddenly cuts out like the fuel just runs out. So I pump the gas pedal over and over then it goes again. The engine dosent die out. It will do this several times during the day. It seems like it does it more when the engine is cold. The truck runs fine when I drive it in 5th gear wide open. I usually can fix my own cars but this problem seems a little hard to figure out. Thanks

Answer
I don't have service manuals for this vehicle, and I don't remember what type of idle control this engine has, but I will try to offer some advice.  It sounds like your fuel pump might be going bad.  I would make sure that the maintenance is all done, if the spark plugs are worn-out, or the PVC valve is sticking, the engine could intermittently run rough and stall.  Always check the easy stuff first.

I hope this helps,
Dave
