Ford Repair: 1992 Ford Explorer 4x4, ford explorer 4x4, ebay

Question
Hello, I am working on above Explorer, speedomometer, speedo gauge fluctuates when I am barely moving 5 mph it reads approx. 25 mph moving aprox 30 mph it reads 60 mph etc, checked the gear and cable at the trans end and gear is fine and cable spins freely, but I cannot see any way to pull the cable at the speedo head without dropping the dash, I was wondering if this symptom is cable related as this system does not appear to be electronic. but I would like to find a way to replace the cable without pulling the dash. If you have any advise I would be very thankfull! Steve
but this is outside of my expertise

Answer
From the symptom that you described, I would guess that the Speedometer is bad.  You can remove the cluster without dropping the dash.  I would recommend trying to find a used cluster, possibly from a used auto parts recycler or eBay.  The Explorer is a very popular vehicle, I'm sure you could find a good inexpensive replacement.

I hope this helps,
Dave
