Ford Repair: Fuel System, ford f 150, carbon canister

Question
I have a 1988 Ford F-150, it has two fuel tanks. Recently I have had trouble while using the front tank: shuddering and eventually dying, as if the gas isn't getting to the engine. The problem would stop when I switched to the rear tank and the truck would run fine.  Gas is also comming up through the hose that vents the gas tanks to the carbon canister and leaks out while driving. I am now unable to use the front tank at all, and, due to the leak, am getting horrible mileage with the rear tank. Could you please help?

Thank you,
Justin

Answer
Justin,

It sounds like you have a bad fuel pump, of which that year F-150 was famous for. Check the voltage to the fuel pump on the frame rail, driver's side. Also check for voltage coming out of the fuel pump in the front tank. You will need to check this from where the wires are coming from the top of the front tank. If you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me. Hope that this helps and good luck.
