Ford Repair: 86 ford bronco efi, electronic fuel injection, ford bronco

Question
ok, i know u probably don't answer questions about vehicles this new, but here goes.........
this past week my truck, a 1986 ford bronco with electronic fuel injection, started smoking, espically on acceleration. we thought it was the pcv and replaced it, then put an elbow on the hose going to the manifold (?) and it is still doing it. oil is coming from the breather on the oil fill cap into the air filter box. the truck seems to be running ok other than the smoking. someone told us it could need a ring job, but the plugs we took out a coupla weeks ago look fine. we just replaced a knock sensor that had been broken off for who knows how long. i love my truck and i hate to get rid of it but i just dont know what else to do. any suggestions?

Answer
Ms. Dunning,

You did not specify whether the smoke that you are seeing is white, black or blue in color. Black/Blue smoke could be something as simple as a stuck choke or more complicated like bad rings or valves. Blue smoke is usually band rings or bearings.  Now if it is white smoke, it is usually bad heads or a bad intake gasket. With oil cu=oming up in the air filter box, that is usually a sign that you are building up too much pressure in your crank case, which the PCV  should have corrected. Unfortunately most of them mean a major engine overhaul. It would be cheaper to buy a rebuilt engine or obtain a low mileage engine from a reputable salvage yard. A rebuilt engine runs around 3 grand and up and a low mileage  engine from the salvage yard usually costs about 1500 dollars. If you are not out to spend this much money, you will unfortunately be looking for a new vehicle. Hope that  this helps and good luck.
