Ford Repair: Air conditioner seizing up, 1994 ford explorer, ford explorer

Question
I had my ac replaced two years ago at the cheapest place I could find.  The compressor was rebuilt.  A few days ago the ac started making screeching noise which I've heard before.  It was the compressor seizing up.  I unpluged the power cable, but I was wondering what are the chances of damaging the engine if I don't replace the compressor until it comes a part.  This is a 1994 Ford Explorer with 150,000 miles on it.  I don't want to spend any more on it than I have to.  Even paying $500 for a new compressor is painful.

Answer
A failing A/C Compressor will not damage your engine.  Although, if the compressor's clutch seizes-up or comes apart, the engine's serpentine (accessory) belt may be damaged or come off.  The vehicle would no longer be drivable.

I hope this helps,
