Ford Repair: engine dies, ford ranger xlt, ford ranger xlt 4x4

Question
I have a 1993 Ford ranger XLT 4x4. Runs great until I put it in gear then it dies. Would it be some kind of sensor???? What should I do???

Answer
James:

There is a good possiblity that the idle speed control is failing.  The ISC is not adjusting to the load placed on the vehicle when in gear.  Try to keep the vehicle running by using both feet when engaging the gear (keep idle up with accelerator).  If the engine will run once put into gear with higher engine revs, then the ISC is almost certainly to blame.
