Ford Repair: Transmission, mercury cougar, d1 d2

Question
My transmission will not shift from 1st gear to 2nd gear ,3rd gear or overdrive while driving. I have P,R,N,D1,D2. A new convert has been installed but the same problem is still occurring. I need know do I have the right transmission for a 1993 5.0 Mustang motor that is installed in 1995 Mercury Cougar. Do I use AOD or AODE transmission. The motor has a carbertor. I would really appreciate your help, thank you.

Answer
Demond-

The carb may be your problem.  You should be using an AOD unless you have some sort of aftermarket transmission controller to maintain an AODE.  The problem is that 5.0L motors never came with carbs and AODs at the same time.  This presents a problem with the throttle valve linkage (much like a kickdown linkage, but more complicated) since no carbs have a hook-up for the TV linkage.  If the carb is a Holley, there used to be (and may still be) an adapter available from Sacramento Mustang that would adapt the Holleys to accept a TV linkage.  Honestly, you'd be better off running a 3spd C4 but given that you've already got everything together, I'd say the adapter is your best bet.  Hope this helps.
