Ford Repair: Check Engine Light, fuel pressure regulator, egr valve

Question
I have a '98 Ford Explorer and the "Check Engine" light continuously comes on.  I get out and retighten the gas cap and the light will eventually go off until the gas cap loosens again.
I also have a hesitation when stopping, then starting off in a hurry.  Any suggestions? The EGR(?) valve has been replaced. Thanks!  Janet

Answer
Ms. Lusk,

Your light will come on with a loose gas cap as the fuel system is pressurized. If this continues to be a problem, you will need to replace the gas cap. It does not sound like there is anything wrong with the EGR valve. It could, however, be a fuel pressure regulator or a the idle air control valve. The best thing you could do is take your vehicle to a reputable repair shop and have them place it on a scan tool to see what the actual trouble is, if this hesitation and rapid take off becomes a great irritation to you. Hope that this helps and good luck.
