Ford Repair: DRL, drl module, daytime running lights

Question
1998 Ford Explorer:

The DRL will not shut off when the engine is shut off and the key removed.  The lights stay on and the high beam indicator lights up.  The only way I can shut them off  is to remove the battery cable each time I turn off the vehicle

Answer
I would guess that the Daytime Running Lights Module is bad. The DLR Module supplies power to the headlights when the ignition is in the "run" position.  Here is the pinpoint test from the service manual for this symptom:

PINPOINT TEST C:
THE DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS ARE ON WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH OFF

CHECK VOLTAGE TO THE DRL MODULE [On the drivers side frame rail, behind the front bumper.]

Unplug the connector from the DLR Module.

Measure the voltage between DRL module C134-3, circuit 298 (P/O), and ground.

Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

No - REPLACE the DRL module. TEST the system for normal operation.

I hope this helps,
Dave
