Ford Repair: 1996 Ford Explorer Speedometer problem and ABS acting up, slow crawl, brake linings

Question
Hi Dave,
For the past 2 years I have owned a 1996 Ford Explorer 4.0l ohv 4x4 xlt and have been relatively happy with it, except for the fact that the speedometer has a mind of its own. When I first start driving the speedometer will usually be working, but after a few miles it dies and stops working. I notice it dies sooner in the warmer weather than cool. I also notice from pressing down on top of the dashboard above the speedometer it will work for a few more seconds and die again. Also for the past 3 weeks or so, my ABS has been kicking in when I first use my brakes after beginning to driving, and when im slowing down to a slow crawl at traffic lights. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Answer
If pressing down on the dash above the speedometer makes it work, even for a few seconds, the problem is in the cluster.  You first would want to access the back of the cluster and check the electrical connections, if they are all good, the cluster may need to be replaced.  I would recommend calling a local Auto Parts Recycler/Junk Yard that has access to the National Parts Network. The Explorer is very popular, and I'm sure they could find you a good used cluster.

As for the ABS, I would also have the brake linings inspected, they may be grabbing due to uneven wear.  If the linings are fine, you could have a bad speed sensor.

I hope this helps,
Dave
