Ford Repair: 1994 explorer repair, ford motor company, fluid leaks

Question
Patrick, I have 3 questions.
1&2. I purchased a used 1994 explorer. I made the mistake of not checking the horn or cruise control when I drove it.  Neither of these work. Are they electrically connected? How do I go about repairing them.
3. I went out of town for 1.5 months and my wife drove the truck. she called me up one day saying that it was leaking all kinds of fluid. I had her take it in and the mechanic said about $1000 in seals, cleaning, and labor had to be done. He stated that the transmission fluid had leaked into the oil system. I couldn't believe this so I had her take it someplace else. The next place cleaned it up and told her that the oil system was overfilled but they didn't see any major leaks. He told to pay attention to it over the next couple of days. I returned home about 2 weeks later. there is still a little leakage that seems to be purplish in color or sometimes brown. I checked the oil dipstick, the level was fine and the oil didn't seem dirty. the trans level was down some so I added to it. Do you think that there is still a major problem.
I live in powder springs , ga if you have a name of a good trustworthy mech.

Answer
Kyle:

Your first concern is going to be related to the clockspring or its wiring inside the steering column.  The clockspring allows electricity to flow to the horn and cruise control no matter what position the steering wheel is in.  Replacement would require removal of the airbag and steering wheel and can be accomplished by any qualified technichian (not suggested for home repair because of the airbag simulators necessary).

As for your fluid leaks,  transmission fluid is probably your leak, but without inspecting the vehicle I am unable to provide further information.  Factory Ford Dealers are probably the most reputable places to repair your vehicle as the Ford Motor Company is very strict in its requirements.  Dealers have also become more reasonable due to the competitive nature of todays business environment and declining warranty repairs.

Hope this helps,

Patrick
