Ford Repair: Transfer Case - 1993 Ford Explorer, d test, switch button

Question
How mauch (approximatley) to replace a transfer case (4x4 - not engaging and I replaced the switch/button and now I need to do the transfer case) on a 93 Ford Explorer....

Answer
Mike,

Does the vehicle make noise while driving or make clanging noises when trying to engage?  If not, you probably do not need an entire transfer case but more likely the shift motor that mounts to the transfer case is failed.  Some motors can be repaired by cleaning the brushes and sanding the armature.  Others are too far gone and must be replaced.  The easiest way to test the motor would be to have someone actuate the switch while you watch the motor (once removed from the transfer case but still plugged into the harness).  You will of course have to be under the car.  As for a transfer case replacement, a used t-case will probably run somewhere between 3-9 hundred dollars and figure labor to install to be in to be in the neighborhood of 300-400 dollars.  I'd test the motor first.
