Ford Repair: Excessive oil usage; 1993 Ford Aerostar Van, ford aerostar van, ford aerostar

Question
My mom & Dad recently bought a used 1993 Ford Aerostar van. It seemed to be in great shape, no signs of oil leaks, etc. But it is using oil, a lot more than it should. They can't find any signs of the oil leaking anywhere, and it doesn't smole, etc. so what should be the next thing they should have checked? They are on a fixed income, so they can't afford to have mechanics just "experimenting" on it. Please hurry your advice. Thank You. Elaine

Answer
According to Ford Motor Company's current Warranty & Policy Manual:

"Cars and light trucks in normal service should get at least 1500 miles/quart after 10,000 miles of service. Severe service (e.g., towing, hauling, short trips, taxi, extended idling, or law enforcement use) may result in greater oil usage."

Basically, if you are adding 2 quarts of oil between oil changes, this is normal.  If your engine is consuming (not leaking) more oil than this, you may have worn piston rings and/or cylinder walls, or leaking valve seals.

If it is not blowing smoke from the tailpipe while you are driving, I would guess that the valve seals are bad.

I hope this helps,
Dave
