Ford Repair: clutch switch on 92 Escort 1.9, brake light switch, starter solenoid

Question
Hi    I was wondering why there is two switches on the clutch pedal. The main saftey is the one on the bottom I assume but there is one at the top like a brake light switch with several lighter gauge wires.
I replaced the starter motor as the solenoid was just clicking when cranked.
After I put the starter in there was no sound at all.I checked the connections on the saftey switches and flicked the plungers a few times and now everything seems to be working o.k.
I guess the question is should I replace one or both of these switches or is it just a fluke the switch stopped making contsct?
The grounds and battery were also checked.
I would appreciate some feedback.
Thankyou

Trevor

Answer
The switch on the clutch pedal with the smaller gauge wires going to it is the Clutch Pedal Position Switch.  This switch deactivates the speed control when the clutch pedal is depressed.  This switch is not connected to the starter circuit and would not cause the starter to not engage.

The most common reasons for the starter to not engage and the starter solenoid to click are, a weak or discharged battery and/or poor/dirty battery cable connections.

I hope this helps,
Dave
