Ford Repair: 1993 ford taurus heat system, coolant leaks, radiator cap

Question
Dear Dave, I am having a problem with my car, well obviously. I have noticed that my car has been leaking water and some anti freeze, I know it is not the radiator, I just got a new one. But the real problem is that the my vents only blow cold air, even though they are set to warm. The wires for the temperatue control are hot, but it doesn't seem to be making the air warm. I have fixed the water leak, but the heat still doesn't work. Since the weather is getting colder, I was wondering if you could help me.

Answer
It sounds like there might be air trapped in your heater core.  First, make sure that the coolant leaks are all fixed and the cooling system is full. The air trapped in the system should work it's way out as the engine warms and cools a few times.  If not, you'll have to bleed (burp) the system.  You could rev the engine up an down with the heat on full, the engine should be cool and the radiator cap off. As the engine warms up, the coolant movement should work out the air.  You could also use a vacuum pump and draw the air out through the radiator fill.

I hope this helps,
Dave
