I checked the wires coming out of the tank.  The connector was well sealed and ther was no corrosion on the connectors of the wires.
How do I check the ground?  Is the pump in the fuel tank?
There is a unit mounted on the frame with the gas lines from both tanks connected to it.  There are no electrical wires connected to it. What is its roll ?

as for the gauges its either the wires from the tank or wires by the gauge.i would check the wires coming out of the tanks as they take the most abuse. if they are not broken check for a bad ground.as for the front tank it sounds like the fuel pump is going bad .i have seen this same thing in many fords where the tank will work when going but not when sitting is a sure sign the pump is going bad.hope this helps.

Answer
Jack,

Yes, your fuel pump is in your fuel tank. The unit mounted to the frame with gas lines from both tanks connected to it is either your port fuel tank selector valve or your single and/or duel function reservoir. To test the ground you will need to go on top of the tank. There you should find an electrical connector. You will need to unplug it then turn on your key (do not turn the engine over), in this way you will be able to find which one is hot and which one is your ground. Depending on what type of tester you use will determine how you test the ground to see if it is bad. Hope that this helps and if you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me. Good luck.
