Can you swap an A4LD tranny for an AOD both from 1989 Mustangs and what would it take to do so?
Answer -
Sandy-

Assuming both are non-V8 models (V8s didn't get A4LDs, but both V8s and 4 cyl. cars had AODs...they were just designed differently), they should be swappable.  If it's a 4 cyl. AOD all you'll need to change besides the tranny is the flywheel (likely), the bellhousing (likely), and the associated cables and connections.  Hope this helps.

Thanks, Steve, but I should have told you that the A4LD is in a 4 cyl. and the AOD is coming out of a V-8.  What would that take?

Answer
Sandy-

That's a bit different.  The V8 and 4 cyl. AODs differ mostly in their bellhousings, their input shafts, and (I believe) their tailshafts.  This stuff would all be easy enough to come by, especially at a salvage yard.  You'll probably have to replace the transmission mounts as well.  I'd do a test fit before installation just to make sure it will physically fit...although I'm sure it will.  People are always swapping V8s into cars that came with 4 cyl. motors.  Hope this helps.
