Ford Repair: transmissions, ford explorer 4x4, torque converter

Question
Iwent to see a mechanic about a leak in a 1992 ford explorer 4x4. He said that it will cost me $300 to repair my problem (parts and labor). He also said he will have to pull the rear transmission in order to drop the front transmission to fix the problem. My question is ,"will $300 be a reasonable amount  and does he have to drop both transmission in order to correct this problem? oh yeah, the leak is in the front transmission seal.

Answer
Yes, I think that $300 is a reasonable price.  He will have to drop the transmission and transfer case to access to front seals on the automatic transmission.  There are two seals on the front of the transmission, the front pump seal and Torque Converter seal.  If the Torque Converter lip seal is bad, it may have damaged the Torque Converter by wearing a groove in its shaft and would also need to be replaced.

I hope this helps,
