Ford Repair: Odor in ford explorer, ford explorer xlt, 1999 ford explorer xlt

Question
I recently bought a used 1999 Ford Explorer XLT with 4.0L V6.  There is a noticible odor in the car when getting in.  I checked the AC drain and it was plugged.  I'm guessing there may be mildew or something growing on the evaporator, but I have no clue on how to clean it.  Any hints?

Answer
I would try to clear the drain with compressed air or a piece of wire (like a wire hanger).  Once clear you and spray a disinfectant like Lysol into the air inlet on the cowl panel below the windshield on the passenger side of the vehicle while the A/C is on and in the NORM position (not MAX). Have the blower motor on high and the window open about 2 inches.  It may take a few sprays on a few occasions to kill everything on the evaporator.

I hope this helps,

Dave
