Ford Repair: 67 Mustang problem areas, race car trailer, warranty plate

Question
I don't know anything about Mustangs and have someone that wants to trade a '67 Mustang for a race car trailer I want to get rid of. I live in CT and all I know about the car is it is a '67 and has a 289. Are there any special areas that were more prone to rust? How about the frame or shock towers? Is there an easy way to tell what parts aren't original?

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Mr. Sperry,

Yes, you need to make sure that the shoke towers are not rusted out as well as the frame rails. Check especially the floor pans and in the trunk over the wheel wells. The easiest way to confirm what is original and what is not is to go to www.mustangsunlimited.com and order a warranty plate decoder book or you can find the warranty plate on the back edge of the driver's door, copy all the info from it and send it to me and I would be happy to decode it for you. Be advised that sometimes these plates are worn and difficult to read. Also look to see if the warranty number on the data plate matches the build tag, which is affixed under the hood to the top inner fender. If the numbers match, then the warranty plate goes with the car. The information that is provided with this tag will tell you whether or not the rear end, engine, paint color and interior are original as well as what extras came with the car. Hope that this helps and if you wish me to decode the plate number or you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me. Good luck.
