  Your EGR system (or exhaust gas recirculation system) is set up to improve emissions on later model cars.  Basically, it recirculates a small amount of exhaust gas from the exhaust system back into the intake side of the engine so reduce emission gases.  The system itself isn't too complicated, but there are quite a few parts involved in it.  Hope this helps.
