Ford Repair: E450 Shuttlebus--1999, engine harness, turbo diesel

Question
Sir,

I recently bought a Van chassis with the 7.3 turbo diesel.I went to pick it up and someone had stole the alt.and alt. bracket so I could not bring it home.I put a hot batt. in her and spun her over but it would not start.I sounded like it had good compression and it had a half a tank of fuel.I wanted your recomendation on where to start checking once I put the alt.back on?Does this fuel pump system have a bleed procedure and can I check for fuel there?Van is showing 118,000 low miles. Is there any wire that must have power for it to run?
            Thanks for the help,Gary

Answer
Gary, the powerstroke is completely computer controlled, so if the wiring isn't intact for the engine harness it will not start.
Bleeding the fuel lines of air is seldom needed (unlike the old IDI diesels) and you can easily remove the fuel filter lid to see if the bowl is full.  It has a drain lever on the backside (yellow handle) to drain water from the bowl without opening the lid.
Check the oil level, make sure it is full.  After that, you'll need a powerstroke-trained technician to run some computer scans to determine if the RPM signal is there, ICP is sufficicient, etc.
Hope this helps... it's not a 'user-serviceable' engine for the most part, and after 100,000 miles the warranty is expired and it can be quite expensive.  The best owner service you can do for it are keeping the oil changed (15W40 diesel rated) and the air filters clean (crucial!).
