Ford Repair: Molding, mercury couger, bad shape

We have a 1989 Mercury Couger and the molding on the sides, rear and front are in bad shape.  The substance covering the molding is gone/worn  in many areas that show the yellow colored molding . Local shops tell me I cannot obtain or paint the worn molding.  I'am not sure they are correct.  Please help.   tks

you can paint it, just dont put the paint on real thick and its better to use a flat color, since black is about the only flat color used on cars i suggest you paint them flat black.  Ive done it lots of times, just be careful not to spill gasoliene on them when you fill the tank, spary can paint will come off if gas gets on it.
