Ford Repair: transmission service, pan gasket, ford taurus

Question
Two weeks ago, I took my car (1993 Ford Taurus) in for repair concerning an oil leak (oil pan gasket) at which time they detected a transmission fluid leak. The invoice states: "Drain & refill trans fluid, clean or replace trans filter, replace pan gasket if removal is required for fluid service." Parts list as "trans fluid and trans filter kit"
Prior to this service, I was not having any trouble with the transmission.
The problem: when the car comes to a stop (as at a stop sign or traffic signal, etc), it seems to shift into neutral, then won't go anywhere. The more I drive it, the worse it's getting. I move the gear shift lever in an attempt to engage the gears; the results seem sporadic and unpredictable. Then, suddenly, the car will LURCH forward creating a short squeal of the tires. Can draining and replacing the trans fluid cause problems? Why would this problem suddenly manifest? Would repairing it be feasible? or sensible?
Thanks for your input!

if you had no problems with the tranny before you took it to the shop i would take it back and make them fix it for FREE.it sounds like they put the filter in wrong or broke somthing in the process.also check to see if the tranny is full.the car must be running and warm before you check it.hope this helps.
