Ford Repair: 79 bronco stalling, mud truck, auto 4x4

Question
Hello, I have a 79 bronco 2bbl, 351m, auto, 4x4, which has been recently machined over. The engine will fire up and idle only at high rpms, the engine is very sluggish when I try to rev the motor. If I try to lower the rpm it will stall out. One note, the choke is all most closed during this.  If I try to open the choke it stalls out.  If I lower the idle it'll stall out.
Question 2. when i rotate the distributor to dial in the motor I hear an arching nosie from the coil.  I recently tried to check the distributer timing and when i pulled it out I heard sparking noise from the shaft and block area. Is this a bad ground?
Repairs: New cap, rotar, plugs, wires, distributor, original carb that I rebuilt, good fuel flow to the carb. Also, I only put the basic vaccum lines needed back on, this will be strickly for a mud truck, Thanks for the help.

Answer
It is very important that your distributor is timed properly.  Set your idle at 14 degrees advancement.  Any tuneing that is done with the timing not set right is a compleat waste of time.  if you hear an arching it may because you have adjusted the timing too far and the spark is not reaching the plug and instead sparking out of the coil.  I dont rebuilt carbuerators because you never know if they are working right.  If you have timing set right and your engine seems impossible to tune i would try using a new carb or at least one you know works good on another engine.  Also, factory carbs or carbs set up for emmisions need to have all the vacume lines blocked off, a vacume passage thats open will give the problem you describe.  I suggest investing 200 dollars in a new holly two barrel.  They come in 350 - 500 cfm so you will get better performance and they are set up for no emmision equipment.  They are simple and easy to work on.
