Ford Repair: Grinding noise with and without brakes applied, power steering pumps, ball joints

Question
Hi!  I have a 2000 Ford Explorer that has been making a groaning sound on and off for quite a long time, but only when I turned the steering wheel sharply.  Now today I had a TERRIBLE scraping or grinding noise from the front end with and without applying the brakes.  Could this be the CV joint or brakes?  The brakes are fairly new (about 1 year old) I was in an accident a couple of years ago where a dump truck rear-ended me and broke the tie rod and such. Shortly after that, the groaning in the steering started.  I have not had any problem steering though.  Please advise what you think the problem is and what is a reasonable amount for repairs.  Thank you SO much!    Karen

Answer
Karen, the noise you've been hearing may not be anything unusual, as power steering pumps make some noise and get louder with the load of turning.
However, the new loud noises you're hearing do sound like a cause for alarm!  Have the front end inspected by a specialist, and see what they recommend.  You may have worn ball joints or upper control arms that could make a loud noise when turning - delaying these repairs could sacrifice your safety!
If you're looking for it yourself, examine the knuckle behind each front wheel - look at the pivot points while someone is turning the steering wheel for you - you may be able to pinpoint the source of the noise while you're watching the movement and touching the components.
Good luck - hope this helps!
