Ford Repair: transmission problem, 390 engine, shift out

Question
I have a 1967 GTA mustang with a 390 engine and a C6 tranny. The car is in restoration. It has been sitting for years and now it is ready to drive. It drove out good for a while but the tranny just stopped, wouldn't shift out when it got hot.My question is could the car have been driven to hard to soon.We burned tire rubber a few time testing it out. Some one said something about the band was burned off, what does this mean? I am sadden because of this. Please let me know what you think could be the problem.Thank You

Yes, running it too hard after letting it sit for a long time could cause the transmission problems unless you changed the fluid first.  As for a burnt band, bands and clutches are what help an automatic transmission shift.  If a band burns up then you'll have problems shifting.  But I wouldn't worry...after letting a car sit for extended periods sometimes it's necissary to rebuild the transmission anyway.  And with a C6 you've got one of the cheaper transmissions to rebuild.  Hope this helps.
